Change in Direction
There will be a different path for this site moving forward

Where This is Going
Up until this point, this site has been used (poorly) as a general how-to reference for increasing online privacy. Education around the importance of privacy and providing tools to help guard it will still be a big part of what we do here, but I'm planning on making more room for opinion pieces and general commentary moving forward.
Why the Change?
The short answer is to improve consistency and, hopefully, usability for the site. Staying focused on authoritative long form articles has resulted in sporadic posting and constant tension between writing what I know to be valuable versus linking to other high quality sources that are writing similar content. As an example, I don't think there's a lot of value in me writing about how you should enable lockdown mode on an iPhone, but sharing the solution to a niche home assistant issue I encountered may be more valuable.
There's also a reality that people can more easily retrieve step by step instructions from the LLM of their choice. Now don't misunderstand where I'm going here; I love a good LLM and use a variety of them quite frequently. For all the slop they generate they can be a fantastic tool when used correctly. However, in my case, trying to generate long form, authoritative content on practical privacy issues would necessitate heavy LLM use for a variety of reasons. I'm not against that, but this site would end up being a poor LLM middle man, containing information that may be more readily available and digestible 6 months from now when the models improve. That feels like a race to the bottom and doesn't serve anyone particularly well.
What to Expect
Shorter, but more frequent articles focused on niche issues, solutions, and opinion pieces about news in the privacy world. I'm sure this will also evolve further over time. I'm excited to try new things here and I hope you'll stop by occasionally to check it out.
